Hey Celeste,

I am 32 year old white female with really black natural hair, that is really thick and sometimes very coarse and wavy. What are the best products to use to relax and make it soft? My hair is about 2inches past my shoulders. Thank you so much.
Sandra

Hey Sandra,

You must have been very good in a former life to be rewarded in this one with thick, black, wavy hair. You might not be convinced yet, but with a good cut and good products, coarse hair is actually an asset because it has texture. Texture gives you the power to manipulate your hair into styles that those of us with straight, fine hair can only dream about.

Before you do anything, get your hair into shape. If you wash it every day, stop. Not permanently, just not as often. Every third or fourth day should be fine for coarse hair. If you workout every day or play sports, try rinsing it with water instead of shampooing to get the sweat out or use a gentle shampoo meant for daily use. No matter how often you shampoo, you should always use a gentle shampoo and conditioner. Choose one that specifically mentions dry or coarse hair.

Your main defense against dry hair days is a thick, moisture replacing conditioner. If you have coarse hair, never wash hair without applying a conditioner that rinses out. An intense conditioning mask that's applied to hair dry and left on for 10-15 minutes before shampooing and rinsing out is also good for coarse hair every other week.

If you have enough patience and are willing to practice, a good relaxing balm or grooming cream can tame even the coarsest hair. Rub a small amount (dime or quarter-sized, depending on length of hair) onto your hands and work into your hair. Start at the ends and work toward the roots. You can also comb it in.

Styling Tips

* If you want to wear your hair straight, use a round boar's hair brush (the largest you can find) or a wide, flat brush and blow dry in a downward direction after applying styling cream or balm.

* Start at the top of your head rather than the bottom. This will keep your hair from getting big in the middle. Divide hair into three sections for each side and the back, so that you are working with 9 sections. Working from side to side, start with the top sections and finish with the bottoms.

* Blow dry hair from above the hair, rather than underneath. This will help cut down on volume.
