fall hairstyle '60s-inspired half updo

Finish with a retro, yet modern, hairstyle

Since Claire’s work look was mod-inspired, hairstylist Sura Radcliffe from Byu-ti Salon, wanted to give her hair an updated ’60s style. “Even though this look references the past, it’s actually very modern,” says Radcliffe. “Everyone wants more volume these days; they want to get away from the sleek, straight look.” Here’s how to get Claire’s hairstyle:

1. Start with dry, day-old hair. You can make it “dirtier” by spraying sections of the hair with hairspray or other hair products — it’ll hold the style better.

2. Section off a medium-sized portion of hair from the crown. This section should start at each temple. Pin this section on top of the head.

3. Using a 1 1/2-inch curling iron, curl the bottom of the hair, alternating the direction of the curl with each section. Spray each section with hairspray so the curl holds. Radcliffe recommends Pureology Colour Stylist Strengthening Control Zero Dulling Hairspray, $18.

4. After curling the entire base, move back to the top section of hair. Separate a 1/2-inch section of hair in the very front along your hairline and pin to the side as you work with the rest of top section.

5. Using a large tooth comb, backcomb the rest of the hair on the crown. The more you backcomb, the more volume you’ll have. As you backcomb, work away from the face in a single row, as if creating a Mohawk.

6. Next, take the 1/2-inch front section of hair and pull it back, covering all the backcombed hair. Do the same with the hair from the temples. This should create a pouf of hair that looks sleek. Use bobby pins to secure the hair in the back.

7. Finish by misting the entire head with a strong hold hairspray.
