Step 1: Prep hair with a heat-protective spray.



Step 2: Blow dry hair for a smooth top, with sideswept bangs, like Underwood’s. Let the ends air dry.



Step 3: Back comb at the crown for volume.



Step 4: Wind 1-inch wide sections (from eye-level, down) around a 1-inch curling iron. When cool, shake the curls out with your fingers. “Curling curls makes them look smooth and shiny, like in this photo,” Hawkins says.



Step 5: Pull the sides back with bobby pins and mist all over with hairspray. (Try L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray, $14.99).
