The secret to perfect shades

Makeup artists can’t always find the perfect shade of lipstick, blush or eye shadow for the look they want to create. Their solution: make their own. At almost every show you’ll see artists mixing colors (often on their hands) to get the perfect shades. The good news is sometimes these new shades make their way into the makeup brands’ collections.

Backstage at Bill Blass, MAC makeup artist Lisa Butler mixed black eyeliner with fuchsia lipstick to create a darker shade — something to try at home.

The nail artists backstage do it too. Lots of the shades used on the runway are “one coat of this, two coats of that” custom shades. But more on nails later …
