I wish I knew how to rock my natural curls when I was in high school. It wasn’t until I caught a glimpse of Keri Russell’s gorgeous, curly hair in Felicity that I realized just how gorgeous curly hair can be. And I started seeing more and more celebrities coming out with their natural curls, including Debra Messing, Beyonce, AnnaLynne McCord and Taylor Swift.
But I had no idea how they made their curls look so … good. I tried letting my hair do its thing, once. And it just turned out to be a mess. As in, nobody wanted to say anything to me but I could see them gaping in horror at my head. So even though it took me hours each week, I went back to straightening my hair every day.
And then I got the chance to speak with Ouidad, a curl expert and founder of the Ouidad salons, which specialize in cutting and styling curly hair. She walked me through the step-by-step process for diffusing curly hair styles — everything from the products to use, the temperature of the blow dryer and even exactly what to do with my hands.
Needless to say, I haven’t touched a flat iron ever since. I can finally feel comfortable showing off my curly hair. I only wish I had known this technique back in the day. Instead of hiding my natural curls, it would’ve been so refreshing to feel confident about my hair.
But better late than never, right? Oh, and I also included a list of the best diffusers out there. Pick one of them, and read this guide to finally get those sexy, shiny, perfectly frizz-free curls. And if you have a curly-haired friend in need, pass this on and she’ll love you for life.
