Hair Dare: New Year, New Look

Day One: Top Knotch

Right out of the gate I should tell you something: I am very self-conscious of wearing my hair slicked back tightly. So this style pretty much tested all my strength — slicked and band — what the?! But once I paired with a bright lipstick (you could rock some other statement like gigundo earrings), I forgot about my exposed full face hang up. And the best part is it only takes a few minutes — plus you can start with dirty hair.

Get the look:

You have to start with a rather smooth blowout or you won’t get that slickness you’ll be looking for. But you can cheat by just blowing the front, face-framing pieces straight. Then channel your best ’80s memories and flip your head upside down, brushing your hair from the nape of your neck to your tips. Pull the hair into a high pony that’s ever-so-slightly off center and secure with an elastic. Now flip upright and gently tease your pony until it’s fairly full, then twist it into a circular bun. Secure with bobby pins. Now slide a brightly colored band just past your roots. Tame flyaways with hairspray (especially toward the nape of your neck).
