12 Ways to Beat Hat Hair

Aussie Aussome Volume Styling Mousse

Before you put on your hat

Hats trap heat, causing your hair to hold whatever shape it starts with. So if you put on a hat with flat hair, it’ll stay that way. But if you start with tons of volume, well, you see where I’m going with this, don’t you?

To lock in volume from the start, apply a volumizing mousse or re-moldable pomade at the roots of your hair. “Massage your scalp in a circular motion,” says Cristophe. Then, with your dryer on low heat, aim the heat against where you want your part to fall, says Grmolyes.

The trick here is to use a product that can be quickly re-activated by water or heat. This way, once you take your hat off, you just need to apply water or heat to your hair to bring back the volume. Here are a few of my favorite recommendations:

Bumble and bumble’s Sumotech Wax, $25
