Side-pony perfection

For this look, hair should be brushed smooth so it's shiny and glam. Here's what to do:

Step 1: Back comb hair at the crown for height. Brush more hair smoothly over the top, to hide evidence that you backcombed.
Step 2: Form a ponytail on the side of your head directly behind your earlobe. "Placing it there is key because it pushes the tail over your shoulder," Hawkins says.
Step 3: Wrap hair around the elastic to hide it and pin it in place under the pony.
Step 4: Win American Idol. (OK, this step's a stretch, but at least you've got the hair nailed down.)
