Start with a layered bob with choppy ends. Shaggy ends come from a razor cut or texturizing shears (so tell your hairdresser to use 'em).

1. Spray clean, damp hair with volumizing spray and comb through. (Try Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizer Spray With Keratin Amino Acids, $28.)
2. Flip your head upside down and blow dry. "It adds volume at the roots," Gardner says. Flip back up when it's mostly dry.
3. Use a medium round brush to finish styling. Be sure to lift the roots and direct bangs to the side.
4. Rub a dab of texturizing paste (like Jonathan Product Dirt Texturizing Paste, $14) onto your fingertips and pinch and clump the ends to create a tousled, messy look.
