Ever wonder what your lips would say if they could talk? (Well, OK. You know what I mean.) I’m talking about your lip shape. Whether your lips are plump, wide or thin, they speak volumes about your personality and the way you portray yourself.
We asked Miami-based makeup artist Marissa Nemes to read our lips, and she gave us a perfect analysis of not only our own lips, but every lip shape we could think of. Check it out — it’s free, it doesn’t require your palms or a crystal ball, and it might be the best (and only) lip reading you’ll ever get.
Full lips
Women with curvy, voluptuous lips like Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson are “courageous and self-assured,” Nemes says. There’s nothing more gorgeous than having perfectly symmetrical lips, and they make you look exceptional and irresistible.
Makeup tip: “In order to keep these lips soft and sultry and not take any attention away from the rest of your face, stick with a simple lip moisturizer,” Nemes says. We like Kiehl’s Lip Balm, $7. Having naturally full lips means you don’t need a ton of lip liner (or at all, really). Just apply a bit of color without overdoing it.

Wide lips
Women with wide, stretched lips like Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway are “lively and have a large circle of friends with many different interests,” Nemes says. As a perfectionist, you are very successful and talented, and you like to determine your own fate.
Makeup tip: “It’s either all or nothing for this lip shape,” Nemes says. First, use a lip pencil and draw just inside your natural lip line, stopping right inside the corners of your mouth. Then “use a light lip balm for day and a dark matte lip stain going into night,” she says. We love Laura Mercier Lip Stain, $20.
Round lips
Women with button-shaped lips like Rachel Bilson and Drew Barrymore are “interested in exploration” and a little bit rebellious and flirtatious, Nemes says. You are easy on the eyes, and people are naturally drawn to you because of your “vivacious charm mixed with your risque fashion sense,” she says.
Makeup tip: Keep the sex appeal going with totally pouty lips. Nemes suggests staying on the glossy side by applying a colored lip gloss to both lips (try Chanel Glossimers, $27). If you want to extend your natural lip shape, you can apply your lip liner just beyond the outer corner of your mouth.

Thin lips
Women with thinner lips like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson tend to be “intuitive, sensitive and detail-oriented,” Nemes says. You are sweet natured, but it can come off as being shy and reserved at times. You should stick to glossy nudes on your lips to accentuate what you have and to balance out your facial features.
Makeup tip: Use a neutral pinky beige liner or lipstick all over the lip (try Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, $24). Then top it with a sheer lip gloss to make lips appear more plump. “You can also take an illuminator (like Estee Lauder Ideal Light Brush-On Illuminator, $24.50) and apply it on the cupid’s bow of the upper lip to create more highlight and volume,” she says.
Bow-shaped lips
Women with cute heart-shaped lips like Hayden Panettiere and Reese Witherspoon are “independent, seductive and expressive,” Nemes says. It shows you aren’t afraid to grab life by the horns and enjoy the things you do. You stay glamorous, and you aren’t afraid to speak your mind and take charge of your destiny.
Makeup tip:Nars Lip Gloss, $24 You’re able wear a range of colors, from stunning deep shades to soft, toned-down ones. Just dab on a sheer gloss over the top lip to complete your look (try Nars Lip Gloss, $24).

Downward-turned lips
Women with downward shaped lips like Renee Zellweger and Natalie Portman are private and mysterious. People see you as “exotic and quick-witted,” Nemes says. Your brainy nature is extremely attractive, but you are also a picky person and can be hard to please.
Makeup tip: Sheer, neutral colors look best on you. Nemes suggests starting off by filling in your lip with a neutral-toned lip liner and topping it with a sheer lipstick (try Korres’ Mango Butter Lipstick, $18) for a brilliant finish.
