To combat these unhealthy complexions, women turned to the "beauty pros" of the time, who recommended white lead applied directly to the face. After all, having a pale hue was considered fashionable for the time. Unfortunately, the white lead powder was not safe and many women were poisoned and died in the name of beauty.
