Pale face fashion

Smallpox was no small matter during the Middle Ages. As it moved across Europe, those who survived were often left with scars, sores, and other deformities. To combat these unhealthy complexions, women turned to the "beauty pros" of the time, who recommended white lead applied directly to the face. After all, having a pale hue was considered fashionable for the time. Unfortunately, the white lead powder was not safe and many women were poisoned and died in the name of beauty.
