Hair Dare: New Year, New Look

Day Two: Mad Woman

OK, I confess, I am obsessed with the styling on “Mad Men.” So this style is clearly my favorite — and also the most difficult to describe with words. So bear with me. It actually doesn’t take very long to complete and the key is to have a really cool hat or accessory to highlight the style (and hide any mistakes you make). The girls in the secretary pool will flip when you pull this off.

Get the look:

Starting with a smooth blowout, separate a four-inch front section of your hair, two inches to the right and two to the left of a center part. Just clip it out of the way and then pull the remaining hair half up from ear to ear, tease it like crazy and pin it out of the way as well. Pull the remaining half of your hair into a low ponytail. Curl the tail so you have basically one ringlet and brush through it to soften. Now take the middle section just above the ponytail and create a French twist with the tips going down toward the ponytail, making a big bee-hive style bump at the top. The remaining ends from the top half can be wrapped around your ponytail, which you can leave as a dangling curl or twist into a bun if you like. Now let the front section loose and create a deep side part, smoothing each section of hair on either side of the part back to just underneath your ponytail and bun. Secure the pieces just underneath the tail. There is no exact science and I guarantee it won’t come out the same way twice, but remember, the hat or accessory can conceal any mistakes. Good luck!
