When to Trash Your Makeup

Trash after three or more years:

Perfume: Perfume’s high alcohol content (if you keep it in the bottle) means it can last a couple of years. One catch: heat can alter the scent, so make sure to keep your fragrances in a cool, dark place — no matter how beautiful the bottle, says Brook Harvey-Taylor, creator of Pacifica Perfume.

Lotions: Like perfume, lotion can last a long time. To keep your favorite lotion from checking out early, celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley suggests, “cleaning the pump (remove dry/crusty lotion from spout) every week or so, depending on how often it’s used.” And if your lotion starts to thin, she recommends “adding Vaseline to thicken the texture.”
