textured braid headband for date night

Finish with an unexpected braid

Braids are everywhere this season, from the runway to the streets. For Joanna’s date night look, Radcliffe wanted to create an updo out of messy braids. One of Radcliffe’s secret tricks for achieving this look: push the hair up as you braid, almost like backcombing. Not only does this “create texture, but it also takes the schoolgirl out of the look.” Here’s how to steal Joanna’s hairstyle:

1. Start with dry, day-old hair. Part hair on the side and continue the part all the way down the back of the head. If you have bangs, leave those to the side; you’ll work with them later.

2. Begin a French braid on one side of the head. Once the braid reaches the top of the ear, transfer to a traditional braid. As you braid, push the hair up with your fingers, creating a messy textured braid — this should produce an effect similar to backcombing. Secure the braid with a small elastic.

3. Repeat the step above on the other side of the head.

4. Pull the ends of the braids onto the top of the head so they create a headband of hair. Use bobby pins to secure the hair, and hold down any piece of the braid that pops off the head. Make sure the elastics are hidden in the hair.

5. Next, take your bangs and use a crimper to create waves in the hair. Set the waves in place with bobby pins.

6. Spray the entire head with a strong hold hairspray. Just before leaving the house, remove the bobby pins from the bangs.
