Odd Secrets from Fashion Week

The dirty little nail secret

Almost every show has a few people doing nails, but as you can imagine, painting 20 models’ hands and having them dry and perfect in less than an hour isn’t that easy.

There are a few ways around this. Dashing Diva manicurist Patricia Wanke says models often smudge their nails, so she uses an old acrylic paint brush dipped in remover to lightly brush over smudges and smooth them out. She also said (jokingly, of course) that she threatens to beat the models that mess up their nails.

But the solution we’re seeing more and more backstage: fake nails. This allows the manicurists to have them all painted and dry before the show (crucial if they’re doing any sort of design or multiple colors) and keeps the models from messing things up. Wanke says she’ll even use them on any model with less than perfect nails — it’s quicker than giving her a full manicure backstage. Butter London Creative Director Nonie Creme also said that using fake nails allows her to paint intricate designs and do effects like tips without making a mess on the models’ hands (anyone who’s tried to give themselves a French manicure knows what she’s talking about).
