But before you swipe some on, make sure that any under eye circles or blemishes are thoroughly covered. “Anything purple will make the red in your skin stand out,” says Maderich. Fair skin tones: If you don’t want to overwhelm your skin, try a sheer wine-colored purple lipstick, like Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, $15.

Medium skin tones: Skip the darker shades and grab a lavender hued lipstick, like Nars Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Born This Way, $26. “You can wear it on top of lipstick or on its own,” says Doud.

Darker skin tones: According to Doud, “The darker the skin, the more blue-based the purple should be, so that your skin doesn’t look ashy,” says Maderich. He suggests Dior Dior Addict Lipstick in Mysterious Mauve, $30.
