Best Makeup for Brown Eyes

Born a brown-eyed girl? Lucky. Hey, your eyes are sexy enough to earn a legendary song. But why stop there. You can really make them pop (not out of your head obviously — geez) with makeup tricks used by A-list celebs.

We’re always wowed by the stunning brown eyes of celebrities like Natalie Portman. And if, say, we were working the red carpet one day and came across her, we’d stalk on over and demand the secret. (One of those bright/annoying interrogation lights, optional.)

But since we don’t have a ticket to any upcoming premieres (and they probably wouldn’t let us bring a lamp anyway), we did the next best thing — convinced celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles (who does brown-eyed beauties Eva Mendes, Halle Berry and Vanessa Hudgens) to spill her secrets. Check out her celebrity style tips on how to get our favorite looks, from natural and sophisticated to colorful and ultra glam, on the next few pages. Some other celebs you’ll see rocking brown eyes are Christina Ricci, Gwen Stefani, Jada Pinkett Smith, victoria beckham, and Kim Kardashian.

And so none of us ends up on a “worst looks” list, we also rounded up a few basic tips on what not to do. While Stiles says that the only rule in makeup is that there are no rules (something we can get on board with), we suggest you follow the “guidelines” below (see more on why in the gallery):

1. Avoid baby blues. While some people can make it work (yeah, Tim Gunn, I’m totally ripping you off — what are you gonna do about it?), most of us end up looking like a badly drawn Barbie.

2. Don’t overdo it. If, when you’re done, you look in the mirror and think, “Maybe I’m wearing too much shadow or liner,” sorry, but yes, you are. Pfft, no biggie. Wipe it off and reboot.
