Nothing is worse than spending a bunch of money on a nice sweater, only to have it ruined in the wash. To make sure your knits are kept looking pristine, here are a few tips from our experts:

• Follow the cleaning instructions carefully and never attempt to wash something that is dry clean only.

• If the item doesn’t require dry cleaning, hand wash your knits with light soap. Then, lay your knits on a towel (on a flat surface) for it to dry.

• Never hang a delicate knit; they should always be folded.

• If you’re putting away your knits for the season, they should be sealed in a container, and stored in a cool, dark, moth-free place.

Finally, Miller cautions against lending out your knits once they are clean and ready to wear. “This is one item I wouldn’t let your friends borrow. Knits stretch and snag easily, and no one will treat your clothing better than you.”
