Stylish Ways to Wear Dirty Hair

Grungy and brush-free

Some good news: You don’t need to use a brush for this look. Brushing distributes the oil from your scalp to the rest of your hair, making it look greasy and stringy. Instead, apply some volumizing powder to your roots and hit it with cool air from the blow dryer while massaging it into your scalp with your hands, says Julyet Berlen of the Cristophe Beverly Hills salon in Beverly Hills, Calif. This will give you that sexy, “rock ‘n’ roll” vibe. See how Los Angeles stylist Ange Todorov says to get this look:

1. Start by braiding a 2-inch section of hair along your hairline on both sides of your head, all the way down to the ends. Tie these braids with a clear elastic.

2. Braid a few more random sections of hair on both sides, and then bring your hair back into a low, messy ponytail. Leave a few pieces of hair (and a braid or two) hanging out of the ponytail around your face.

3. Sprinkle some dry shampoo onto your fingers and massage them into your scalp to mess up the style a little.
