Hair Extensions: The Real Deal

Go with a pro

Jeanne can’t stress this enough: go to an experienced stylist for extensions. And no, that does not mean your hairdresser who’s been in the business for 30 years. That means someone who puts in lots of extensions and has taken additional training specifically for this (since cosmetology school barely covers it).

Before you let her near your hair, ask what training he or she has had and ask to see before and after pictures of real women (not just models or pictures from photo shoots). If you notice what looks like a split in the hair then the extensions are too blunt, meaning the stylist doesn’t know how to properly blend them in.

Sure it’s a pain, but if you’re going to be shelling out hundreds of dollars and putting your hair at risk (since inexperienced stylists or a bad application can cause your hair to break and even give you bald spots), it’s a good idea to do your homework. Your scalp will thank you.
