Now, I know this is something you’ve wondered about — who hasn’t? When I asked the makeup artists about it, they admitted that actors have little rituals before a kissing scene. “They usually brush their teeth or pop a mint. Some actors even carry around a small individual mouthwash in their pockets to make sure they always have fresh breath,” says Berquist-Barker.

But more importantly, the makeup artist needs to make sure there won’t be any lipstick rubbing all over the guy’s face. (That wouldn’t make for a very sexy scene, would it?) “We only apply lip conditioner and lip stain when there’s a kissing scene,” says Berquist-Barker. She recommends using a product like COVERGIRL Outlast Lip Stain, $6. “We also have to [watch out for] other little things, like making sure the actor’s scruff doesn’t irritate his kissing partner’s skin. It’s a full-on production,” she says.
