Tip No. 8: Keep styling products off your roots

“I make sure to keep all products away from my roots.” — Ea Aguirre

Here’s why it works: “The only product you should be using on your roots is dry shampoo,” says hairstylist Bradley Irion. All other products should be kept away from your scalp, since the scalp is where all the grease originates.

Instead, apply product only to the bottom half of your hair. Your ends are usually drier than your roots, so they can handle product without getting greasy-looking. If you really must use product on your roots, look for a spray with alcohol in it to help absorb some of the oil, says Chavez.
