You should always have a classic, timeless black suit in your closet — because you never know when you’ll score an interview for your dream job. Get the highest quality suit you can afford (so you look the part) and make sure the fit is proportional. Inlander says if you’re petite to look for shorter jackets, and if you’re pear shaped to go for a longer cut.

Regardless of your shape, stay away from anything trendy: shoulder pads, anything too shrunken or oversized. You want to be able to wear this for a while, and not have your interviewer distracted by your weird lapels. France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy gets it exactly right.
