Make it all modern

Even if you find an entire wardrobe’s worth of awesome clothes, you don’t want to look like “a victim of vintage,” Roberts says. Here are a few things to keep in mind when wearing your mom’s clothes:

1. Mix the old pieces with the new, don’t do a head-to-toe ’70s or ’90s look. Try wearing your maxi dress or wide-leg jeans with current tops and accessories from stores like H&M.

2. A lot of vintage clothes from the ’70s and ’90s don’t have defined waists, so make sure to wear a belt or structured jacket to keep your figure from being shapeless.

3. Alterations are your best bet at making your vintage finds modern. You can get them altered to fit you exactly, and even change the silhouettes or add different materials to bring the old clothes to this decade. It’s also a great way to get a totally unique and custom outfit without spending a ton of cash.
