Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway combines two classic elements to create this elegant updo: a French twist and ’40s pin-up girl fringe. Sura Radcliffe from Byu-ti Salon in Santa Monica, Calif. tells us how to get the look:

1. Apply a volumizing product to wet hair, and blow dry your hair with a round brush.

2. Pull out a medium-sized piece of hair from your bang area. Using a hot roller, roll back the piece of hair on a diagonal. Bobby pin it to set.

3. As the roller cools, tease your hair at the crown, and gently brush your hair back over the crown into a low ponytail.

4. To get the French twist, start by creating a low ponytail, then hold your ponytail in a vertical direction and twist it into itself. To secure, use bobby pins up the spine of twist, crisscrossing them for maximum hold.

5. Smooth out hair with a tale-comb and spray with strong-hold hairspray to control any rogue hairs.

6. Once the twist is complete and the roller has cooled, comb out bangs with a boar bristle brush to get the retro wave effect. Spray lightly with hairspray.

7. Next, roll up the curl at a slight angle with fingers using bobby pins to secure at base of head. (Radcliffe’s tip: Crisscross bobby pins where your fingers touch the scalp.)

8. Finish by misting entire look with a strong-hold hairspray.
