Eugene Rimmel was a French perfumier who opened his first shop in 1834 on Bond Street in London. However, Rimmel quickly expanded his horizons and moved into beauty product arena, becoming one of the first manufacturers and marketers of cosmetics. His other, more important claim to fame? He created the first-ever non-toxic mascara. (Thanks, Eugene!) It’s no wonder that today, the word rimmel means mascara in seven different languages.
