’90s Hair: Our Loves & Loathes

Next time you’re out with your girls, take a look around. We’re willing to bet that more than half of you have separated-at-birth hairstyles. If this was 1994, that would so not be the case.

Why? Because waaaay back in the ’90s, popular hairstyles were all over the place, from sporty/preppy to Goth, boho/grunge to sexpot, and chameleon hair was the norm. “Everyone was more daring and playful then,” says celebrity hairstylist Sean James Decuers of the Rita Hazan salon in New York City, who has styled Jessica Simpson, Jaime Pressly, and Cynthia Nixon.

Another big difference between now and “the good ‘ol days”: Now, we look to celebrity hairstyles inspiration, but in the 90s, it was all about the supermodels. “Think of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss, and Naomi Campbell — they had a hair makeover every other month,” Decuers says. “If you look at any group picture of them, chances are none of them will have the same hairstyle, and that doesn’t happen today.” (Ahem, check out the pic to the left, see what we mean?)

Granted, an actress can’t lop off her hair on a whim, remember what happened to Keri Russell? But now it seems like everywhere you turn you see long, beachy waves — sexy, but it’s getting kinda boring.

So what should we take away from these best and worst ’90s hairstyles? No, we don’t need to bring back The Rachel — we need to remember to have fun and play with our hair. It’s what Naomi, Kate and Rachel Green would want. So check out our favorite looks from these hot-in-the-90s celebs: Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Calista Flockhart, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen and Kate Moss.
